RIMS Dental College, a boon to the people

IMPHAL AUGUST 17: The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal which was established on 14th Sept., 1972 is imparting quality undergraduate and post graduate medical courses including BDS and B.Sc. Nursing courses.

All sections of people agree that the opening of Dental college on the RIMS campus after 41 years of its existence is an important milestone in the dental care service. All these years aspirants from Manipur, except the 3 to 5 government nominees, had to splurge huge amounts in the private dental colleges to undergo study in dentistry. Only those students whose parents could afford the huge fees could study in private dental colleges in different states.

Now after the establishment of Dental college in Imphal 13 more students from Manipur get admission every year. Like that of medical and nursing colleges the students have to spend very affordable amounts.

However some elements were not obviously amused for their personal reasons. For unexplained reasons some of them feel that Dental college in RIMS was opened in a haste, whatever they intend to mean.

So far people have been getting dental care services from the Dentistry department and it is a fact that the different specialities under the umbrella of Dental
College are yet to be made widely available to the people.

As it is mandatory to develop different departments as a part of the teaching curriculum quality dentalcare services will be made available to the public. These departments have to come up in due course.

With adequate financial back-up from the Union Ministry of Health and family Welfare the RIMS authority has firmed up to bring up Dental college as per Dental Council of India guidelines. There are facilities for various dentures, root canal, cavity, filling and veneering treatments, trauma and ortho treatments and treatment for children below 13 and X-ray and other equipments. Recruitment process for the appointment of Regular of principal, professor, associate professors and faculties for nine departments have been started/advertised and these departments are coming up shortly. In the past the reports of the DCI inspectors regarding the opening of Dental College were not given due attention. It was in the last two years or so that the teething troubles were handled earnestly. Now this college has become a reality despite some obstructions from disgruntled elements.

There is already the second batch of students in this college coming from beneficiary NE states and All India Quota. The Dental College Development Committee under the supervision of the RIMS Director is looking
after essential infrastructures of the college.

The college has started providing quality service in dental care to the people NE region and Manipur in particular at affordable fees.

RUSA Proposes to put a Ceiling of Maximum Number of Colleges to be Affiliated to any University to Two Hundred

New Delhi, August 16, 2013
The Rashtriya Uchattar Shiksha Abhiyan proposes to put a ceiling of maximum number of colleges to be affiliated to any university to two hundred. The proposal has been submitted following several State Universities having a large number of colleges affiliated to a single university. For example Osmania University has 901 colleges affiliated to it while 811 colleges are attached Pune to University. Rashtrusant Tukadoji Maharaj University Nagpur has 800 colleges with it and Rajasthan as well as Mumbai University have 735 and 711 colleges attached to them. The average number of affiliated colleges per university is 300. This phenomenon impugns upon the academic quality of the University. It is imperative that States create more universities so that affiliation does not result in large number of colleges being tied academically to one university.

The one lakh crore rupees scheme when implemented will lead to setting up and upgradation of new colleges and universities. The scheme may also facilitate increased number of students from secondary to higher education.

The Rashtriya Uchchatar Flagship Abhiyan is a new centrally sponsored flagship umbrella scheme aimed at providing strategic funding to State higher and technical institutions. States will develop comprehensive state higher education plans that utilize an interconnected strategy to address issues of expansion, equity and excellence together. Central funding will be linked to academic, administrative and financial reforms of state higher education.

It may be mentioned here that the Medical directorate had issued a notification on April 19, 2013 that the entrance test for the admission into MBBS/BDS courses for the academic session 2013 will be held on June 9th, 2013.

However, it was called off a day ahead of the scheduled date following a state cabinet decision according to which, the candidates for the MBBS/BDS courses will be selected from the merit list of NEET conducted by CBSE.

10 candidates who had received admit card for the said entrance test had challenged the cabinet decision at the High Court of Manipur. The proceedings for the case is still going on at the court.

However, the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has already started their session for the course a few days ago.

Fate of MBBS/BDS candidate still uncertain

IMPHAL, August 9, 2013
The fate of the Manipur MBBS/BDS candidates for the academic year 2013 is still uncertain. On April 19, 2013, the Medical Directorate, Govt of Manipur had made an official notification that the Manipur MBBS/BDS entrance test would be held on June 9, 2013. Admit cards for the entrance test were issued to 5753 candidates.

However, the said MBBS/BDS entrance test was cancelled by a decision of the State Cabinet. Instead, the MBBS/BDS selection would be made from the CBSE conducted NEET merit list which was published in the local dailies on June 7, 2013 it said.

In the mean time, ten candidates out of the 5753 candidates who got admit cards for the entrance test challenged the decision of the State Cabinet by filling a petition at the High Court of Manipur on June 10, 2013. The Court had admitted the petition and its necessary proceedings were going on in the Court till date.

Although the High Court of Manipur has fixed a date for the hearing of the case on August 6, 2013, it was rescheduled on August 8 for final hearing while the Court has directed to those interested parties in the case to submit their argument before August 7, 2013.

As the case was enlisted in the ‘cause list’ of the court today, the hearing of the case started. However, the Court adjourned the hearing till August 14, 2013 as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur, Abhay Manohar Sapre was on leave and will return here on August 13.

It is noteworthy to mention here that Regional Institute of Medical Sciences has already begun MBBS/BDS session for the academic year 2013 while the 30 seats of Manipur quota is now lying vacant and all the state seats of the Jawaharlal Nerhu Institute of Medical Sciences are also laying vacant.
