The down town Charity Trust was formed in 1999 by the down town hospital ltd. The urge to do something for the underprivileged and deprived section of the society led to the formation of down town Charity Trust. Apart from doctors, the members of the Trust include Engineers, Educationists and other professionals from various walks of life. The down town Charity Trust is promoted by down town hospital ltd., the first corporate multi specialty hospital in North Eastern India. It has a distinguished name in the healthcare industry, serving the people of Assam and the North Eastern Region with its expertise for the last 20 years.

Mission of the trust :
To reach premium healthcare facilities to the economically weaker sections of the society
Create infrastructure to develop the human resource of the region

Over the years, the trust has been involved in varied social activities like organising free health camps, undertaking special health programs like the Smile Train Project, the Dhwani Project as well as a free clothes bank “Sankar Madhab Vastra Bank” for the low income group population.The trust has established the Shankar Madhab Rural Charity Hospital at Panikhaiti Assam with the intention to provide quality healthcare at the most reasonable rates to the common people.

Keeping in mind with its second main objective the trust has embarked on the largest educational project of the North Eastern Region. It has partially set up the largest educational campus of the region at Panikhaiti,Assam. The trust has started with Nursing and paramedical programs.Over the coming years the trust intends to add other streams of study as well.

The trust envisages that in the next ten years it can establish one consolidated campus offering almost all available programs to the students of the NE Region. Thus , help is saving brain drain from this region.It believes this will greatly help in improving the quality of human resource in the country.

The Assam down town University was started two years ago after an Act of the Assam Legislature. Though the University is in its infancy state, we have high ambitions and aspire for a vibrant future. We have got an excellent and bright team of faculties with experienced HOD's in all Departments and an enthusiastic team of 2000 students in 33 disciplines pursuing various courses. Recently, we had the opportunity to visit several Universities in the UK and Ireland who have been in the field of education for over 50-125 years. We had a wonderful experience of going around Universities and were able to observe new ideas in teaching, research
and skill development. We propose to develop skill, intellect and expertise in the field of education in the coming
years. Our range of Education which varied from post school level to PhD will also have skill development training programme for school dropouts. They will be prepared as skilled workers in various fields which is absolutely necessary towards building a modern India. From the desk of Vice Chancellor:
Assam down town university was born on the auspicious moment of 29th april 2010, This is the Second Private university in the north-east. The necessity of a private university has been felt since long time, as students from our region have to go to Bangalore, pune, New Delhi and even to UK and USA for studies with high aspirations, to have state, of the art education in different subjects which are not available in the existing universities of the
region. It is with this view, to start newer job oriented courses and modern methodologies of teaching, the assam down town university was born. We have started our first stride in the journey of building up new generations of Engineers, Managers, nurses, Paramedic and even scholars who will drive this country further into development. We hope that this university will be a boon to the aspiring students of the north-east in particular, as they can avail studies in their desired discipline near their home in the comfort anmd warmth of the university. In 2011, we are going to continue with following disciplines, namely Engineering with Five Branches, Pharmacy, Nursing, Allied Health, Hotel Management and many more courses. All these disciplines are equipped with most modern methodologies for teaching. There are 100 plus faculties running 354 courses and 2000 plus students are already undertaking their courses under the single roof of Assam down town university. I hope that students will make the most of this opportunity in the unique academic environment of the Assam down town university.
