Three Bills for new universities in Assam

Guwahati, July 16, 2013: Three Bills for setting up universities, including a Women's varsity, were introduced in the Assam Assembly on Monday.

The Assam Women's University Bill, 2013 seeks to establish a teaching, non-affiliating and a residential women's university in the state at Jorhat, Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The government university will provide facilities and offer opportunities for women both in higher and technical education to promote research in applied science and arts, technology and other achievement.

With Rs 5 crore earmarked in the current year, he said the proposed bill will lead to recurring and non-recurring expenses that will be met out of plan fund up to a period of three years from the date of starting the works.

The Assam Royal Global University Bill, 2013 to establish a private university here was introduced to supplement the government's efforts in extending better educational facilities to students.

A bill for establishing another private university 'The Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya' in Nagaon district was also introduced.

The Bodoland University (Amendment) Bill, 2013 was also introduced for inclusion of representatives of its Teachers Association in the Executive Council of the state-run university set up in 2009.
