State nominees for MBBS/BDS through NEET, says Health Minister

Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing
Imphal, June 20: Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing gave the detailed explanation behind not conducting the MBBS/BDS examination for this year at the Manipur Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

The said examination was supposed to be conducted by the Medical Directorate on June 9 to select state nominees.

The matter was brought up in the house by the Opposition leader MLA Dr I Ibohalbi during a discussion on the grant amount of Rs 378, 31, 57, 000  for Voting on Demands of the Medical, Health and Family Welfare Services for the current financial year. He sought the exact reason for cancelling the examination from the minister concerned.

In this regard, Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing said that there has been an instruction from the Medical Council of India (MCI) that the state nominees for each state should be selected by the CBSE through National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) instead of each state conducting different examinations.

Moreover, as per an interim order of the Supreme Court on May 13, it has been mentioned that states can announce results for entrance examinations that were conducted before the date of this order. However, the final order regarding this has not been delivered yet.

With these conditions, the MBBS/BDS entrance examination which was slated to be held on June 9 was cancelled by a decision of the State Cabinet on June 6, knowing that to conduct this exam will be of no use.

Phungjathang also made it clear that the state nominees will be selected through NEET, and the counselling will be conducted soon.

Meanwhile, the Manipur MBBS/BDS 20113 Entrance Examination Parents/Guardians Association had condemned the three-pronged replies of the government.

Firstly, the Education Minister had given the cause for cancellation owing to a ruling of the Supreme Court. Secondly, the Advocate General had stated the cause to be a MCI notification of 2010 under the aim “One nation for one exam” and lastly, the government had stated that it is a policy of the government.
